Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour

  • 1 Tbsp oil

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 3/4 cup warm water

  • 1 1/2 tsp sugar

  • 1 1/2 tsp active dry yeast

  • 1/4 cup poppy seeds, to sprinkle on top of bagels

  • 8 cup water

  • 3 Tbsp honey

Directions

  • Mix the yeast and sugar with the water, cover and keep aside for 10 minutes, to make sure yeast is active.
  • In a bowl , add the flour, salt , oil and mix well.
  • Add the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients and knead until the dough comes together and is smooth. This will take about 5 minutes.
  • In a bowl lightly oiled put the dough in the bowl and cover with a damp kitchen cloth and allow the dough to rise for 2 hours.
  • Punch the dough to deflate. Knead the dough for one minute. Cut dough into six equal balls. Roll the dough to form 6 perfect balls.
  • Coat your finger in flour, and gently press your finger into the center of each dough ball to form a ring. Stretch the ring to about 1/3 the diameter of the bagel and place on a baking sheet lined with baking paper.Repeat the same step with the remaining dough. Let these rest for 15 minutes.
  • Line a baking tray with baking paper and keep aside.
  • Preheat oven to 245 C/ 475 F.
  • In a deep pan, add 8 cups of water and three tablespoons of honey. When it comes to the boil add the bagel and cook for one minute on each side. Do not overcrowd pan.
  • You can dip your bagels into the poppy seeds or like me I just sprinkled on top with a teaspoon. Transfer to the prepared tray and bake in the oven for 15 minutes.
  • Best eaten on the day , and enjoy.
